The Center of Excellence at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry will be hosting its 3rd annual conference, Bridging the Health Care Gap: Social and Cultural Determinants of Oral Health Disparities, on Saturday, March 28, 2015 from 9am to 12pm in room 605. Three hours of continuing education credit will be provided for attending the conference.
Dr. Caswell Evans Jr.*, Associate Dean for Prevention and Public Health Sciences and Director of the Center for Prevention and Public Health Sciences in Oral Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will serve as keynote speaker.
Conference Course Objectives
•To summarize the present scale and nature of oral health disparities in the United States.
•To describe the social determinants of disparity in oral health status and oral health care.
•To provide a working definition of oral health inequality and oral health equity.
•To outline effective public health policies and initiatives to reduce oral health disparities and move the U.S. toward oral health equity.
•To explore ways that dentists, physicians, and other health care professionals can address oral health disparities in their own practice.

*Dr. Evans received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Columbia University’s School of Dental and Oral Surgery in New York City, and earned his Master of Public Health degree from the University of Michigan, School of Public Health. Prior to taking on his current role, Dr. Evans served as Director, National Oral Health Initiative, for the U.S. Surgeon General, providing guidance and assistance to state and local initiatives for the National Call to Action following publication of Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General.
